Sedation Dentistry
Anxiety and fear of visiting the dentist are quite common. There are many people who would prefer to live in discomfort and pain instead of visiting the dentist for treatment. Fortunately, technological advancements and sedation dentistry allows you to relax and enjoy your visits to the dentist.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry allows the patient to be sedated using various methods to ensure a quick and painless procedure. Sedation can be minimal, which allows you to be awake but very calm. Or, it could be general anesthesia that makes the patient completely unconscious.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
There are different types of sedation dentistry that can be used during your visit.
- Oral Sedation – involves the use of an oral sedative pill to reduce anxiety. Oral sedation is more suitable for short-term dental procedures.
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation – Also known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is administered using a mask on the patient’s face. The use of nitrous sedation helps you to relax while remaining co-operative. Nitrous oxide sedation is preferred for mild to moderate anxieties and wears off quickly.
- IV Sedation – IV (intravenous) sedation is recommended for patients with high anxiety. IV sedation requires special preparation and licensing by your dentist, who will monitor your vital signs during the procedure to ensure everything goes well. IV sedation is preferred for more complicated dental procedures.
